Integrating Math Into Routine Learning Activities

The Early Childhood Learning Centers offer a plethora of possibilities for the kids to analyze the situation mathematically during routine activities such as snacking time, read-aloud sessions, outdoor games, etc., to name a few.

These experiences can go a long way in training a child for more profound mathematical practices— be it conventional or informal, proposed, or impromptu. Here's how it can be accomplished.

  • A Math Tutoring Center, in addition to providing specific instruction, incorporates math learning into almost all of their activities. For example, kids could count, sort, weigh, draw comparisons, sing counting tables, or get engrossed in other counting activities and riddles to refine their skills.
  • There can be several learning opportunities between the traditional classroom sessions too. For instance, taking the kids through the number of days in a week/month/year. While conducting small group activities, making the children count the number of students in the circle or only the ones wearing the yellow tee-shirts.

Apart from the above, they can also be given small exercises such as determining which student has got maximum letters in their name. It will not only keep the kids interested but will also gradually enhance their mental grip on the numbers.

Activities at Math Learning Centers
Learning centers are designed to encourage a child to explore and strengthen their natural instinct about mathematical concepts.
  • Math learning centers provide connecting cubes, bars, number lines, charts, and several other training tools to help a kid identify patterns and compare different forms and measurements.
  • Playing at the Block allows children to investigate, define, recognize, and explore their physical connections and equilibrium. It further helps them learn to draw estimates and compare.
  • Reading, counting, and other numerical books also offer a great way to master math vocabulary and concepts for kids.
  • Children can measure and compare amounts of water or sand at the Sensory Tables. They can fill and empty containers of various sizes, and determine how many cans or spoons are required to fill a container to the brim.
  • Through drawing and painting activities, a child is made to work and learn about various shapes, patterns, and sizes.
